You're kidding right?
We got a note today that there is a child in Joseph's class that is allergic to peanuts. So the whole class cannot have anything containing peanuts or peanut butter.
You're kidding right?
Do you know what my kids lunch time staple's are? Yes PB and J. It's the best way to get some protein in them. I can assure you MY joseph will not smear his peanut butter on your child. I can assure you if you just seperate them all will be well.

I think it's ridiculous you are telling me NOT to bring peanut putter sandwhiches or cookies or snacks because of 1 child?
Ok slam me I can take it. I am sure you all have something to say.

So I am deathly allergic to avocadoes. So allergic that if I were to ingest, I would die in 20 minutes. Not break out in hives, but DIE!!! Many times at mexican restaraunts I have to send my food back because they put the guac on there, even though I have told them not to, and sometimes, they just scrape it off. Those places I have to leave without eating because I would DIE!!! Sometimes I accidentally touch it and within 3 minutes my throat swells and I have hives. I am not saying it would happen to peanut boy, but as a mother, would you want to risk your kid touching it accidentally (say Joe has some on his arm and the kid touches it)-would you want him in hives and not being able to swallow?
It sucks-my son Kyle would starve because he has had pb&j every day for the last 8 years-but it would suck worse if your kid caused that kid's allergic reaction-or worse.
But you're not asking the whole restaurant to not serve guacamole right? You dont care if someone at your table eats it.
I dont know what I would do if it was my child.
It's really all just about liability. The school and the district HAS to send that letter out..and yes, kids will still bring pb&j. At GB, we were a peanut-free school. I had to (and did on more than one occasion) take kids' lunches away when they had pb&j in them. We provided them with something else, but it was definitely all about liability and not wanting to get sued if some peanut-allergic kid ate it accidentally. So, I have to say, I totally understand it.
Sooo... I used to totally think this whole peanut allergy thing was a crock and that parents were just a bit too over the top. UNTIL I had a kid in one of my programs (actually, a brother and a sister) who both had an airborn deathly allergy to peanuts. The school and my program were required to make some crazy accommodations, just as we would for a child with special needs.
It could be worse than just not packing a PB&J for lunch... we had to have a hand washing station outside of the program door (as well as both of thier classroom doors) and every single person that entered the room (regaurdless of peanut consumption or not that day) had to wash both thier hands and thier face to ensure that there were no peanut oils anywhere near the kids and that these children did not DIE while at school or at after school program.
This peanut allergy thing is no joke and I have done my own research and this is true and I think it is a very reasonable accommodation to make to ensure no one dies while sitting next to someone with PB&J.
But-- trust me... I used to feel the same exact way you did. Its a pain, but at the same time understandable.
And fingers crossed... so far this year we have no peanut allegies in all three preschool classes and zero in after school to! :)
Thanks for listening to my LONG two cents!:)

At my gals school there is a "peanut-free" table in the cafeteria. That seems to work out well.
Our school has a peanut free table too... I think it's a good idea. Kassidy had a little girl in her kindergarten class who was allergic to peanuts. We got the same letter home so we could send the right snacks. I took it VERY seriously. Her mom sat in the classroom on back to school night in tears and told us her daughter would DIE if she got ahold of peanut butter or even breathed it in. Scared the CRAP out of me!
Fast forward to last year and Kass had this girl in her class again. The teacher was a friend of mine so I gave her the heads up about the peanut thing. Turns out the parents never said a WORD to the teacher about it! WHAT?! The teacher asked the girl and she said, "Oh it's not so bad anymore." Good for her... but it made me kind of mad! LOL I stressed out the whole kindergarten year thinking my child was going to kill this kid if she ate peanut butter for breakfast before school!
SO while I understand it can be a VERY serious thing, I hope they're not overreacting! I can feel your frustration!
