My Joe

Some days he's just Joseph. A 2 1/2 year old charmer. Walking, talking, running, playing. Lots of people say to us "he looks fine" "he's going to be just fine" and some days it's polished up and looks just like it will be that way.

He's having more test done every day to determine things we haven't be able to test before because of his age. For example, you can put your hand in your pocket and find your keys just by touch you don't have to physically pull it out and look at it. Some people with hemiplegia cant do that they don't have the sensory perception you or I do. They know something is in their hand but they can really "feel" what it is, they have to look at it. So we're testing and so far it seems we're good thank heavens. The other issue is that his brain just barely registers that he has a right side. If you say "plug your ears" he'll only plug his left ear. If you play the cheek game he only grabs one cheek. He was holding his hands way up high to catch a ball and I asked him if he could wiggle his hands, his left hand did and he looked at it and when I asked him if his right hand was up in the air, he didn't even glance that way.
He may only view the world in halves as well. Only see the left side of the clock, we don't know.
Can he work and live and function in the world like this? Sure. He'll do just fine because that's just how he is. But he'll always be a little different. There will be days he may whisper to himself "I just cant do that" and that breaks my heart.

Rob's daughter is the light and the dark of his life. I know that feeling. He writes about having a child with a disability so eloquently. It's a long entry but it's so worth reading it.
